The most durable Kenworth truck bumpers
The most durable Kenworth truck bumper depends on the job. Thick 7-gauge steel or 1/4-inch plate survives vocational abuse, stainless and stainless-clad aluminum resist road salt best, and plastic aero sections are the easiest to damage. For most highway Kenworth T680 trucks, a 10-gauge chrome-plated steel bumper with the correct radar cutout, paired with a polished stainless grille guard, gives the most protection. Tacoma Parts Corporation stocks both halves of that setup for the T680, T680 Next Gen, T800 and T880. Below you'll find a material comparison, the right setup for each model, and where bumpers actually fail.
What makes a Kenworth bumper durable: 5 factors
Five things decide how long a Kenworth bumper lasts: material, thickness, mounting, finish and radar compatibility. The face panel is rarely the first thing to give up. Brackets and frame horns usually bend before the bumper itself tears.
-
Material. Steel bends and can often be pulled straight. Aluminum saves weight but may crack in a hard hit, and plastic breaks first.
-
Thickness. Gauge runs backward: the lower the number, the thicker the metal. 7 gauge is about 0.18 inch, 10 gauge is about 0.13 inch, and 1/4-inch plate is 0.25 inch.
-
Mounting. Brackets and frame horns carry the load. A thick bumper on bent brackets sits crooked, vibrates and works loose.
-
Finish. Chrome, polished stainless, powder coat and PVC coating each fail in a different way (see below).
-
Radar compatibility. On a T680, the wrong cutout blocks the collision mitigation radar and sets fault codes.

Kenworth bumper materials compared
For impact strength, heavy-gauge steel wins. For corrosion, stainless wins. No material wins on both.

Here is how the Kenworth bumpers Tacoma Parts Corporation carries fall into these groups. The 17-inch aero bumpers for the T680 2013–2021 are chrome-plated 10-gauge steel. The 16-inch aero bumper for the T170, T270 and T370 and the 20-inch blind-mount bumper for the W900L are stainless steel. For the T680 Next Gen we also stock multi-piece black plastic bumpers (5, 13 and 16 pieces), which trade impact strength for section-by-section repair.

The most durable Kenworth truck bumpers by model
Vocational T800, T880 and W900 trucks need the heaviest metal available plus a grille guard. Highway T680 trucks need a steel or stainless bumper with the correct radar or sensor provision, plus a grille guard that does not block the radar.

Logging and quarry trucks that take repeated hits usually run 1/4-inch plate bumpers. Tacoma Parts Corporation does not stock plate bumpers, but a Herd 300 grille guard covers the costliest risk: a strike into the radiator.
-
If you run a Kenworth T880 on logging or quarry roads, choose a Herd 300 over the 15-inch bumper, because the guard takes the hit before the bumper and radiator do.
-
If you run a 2013–2021 T680 with collision mitigation, choose the 17-inch bumper with radar cutout, because the version without it covers the radar.
-
If you run a T680 Next Gen, choose the 17-inch chrome bumper plus the inner reinforcement set, because the reinforcements support the bumper from behind.
Why a grille guard adds more durability than a heavier bumper
A grille guard takes the hit before the bumper does and shields the radiator, headlights, hood fenders and grille. Replacing any of those after a strike costs more time and money than replacing a bumper, and a guard protects all of them at once.
Herd 300 grille guards are polished stainless steel. A patented folding bracket pivots the guard down for engine access, installation needs no drilling, and mounting brackets are included. You can order them with a 22-inch LED bar, 6-inch square or round LED lights, or no lights. Tacoma Parts Corporation stocks the Herd 300 for the T680 2012–2021, T680 Next Gen 2022+, T800 and Kenworth T880.
For owners who already run an EX-Guard, we carry EX-Guard bracket sets for the T680 2012–2021 and 2022+. They install with no drilling and no modification. Brackets are matched by model year and bumper type, so check both before ordering.
If you run rural routes at night, choose a full-height deer guard over a heavier bumper, because animal strikes land on the grille and hood, above the bumper line. Our T680 range includes chrome, black and gray finishes, versions with built-in lights, and a full-front 90" × 36" moose guard.
Chrome, stainless or black: which finish lasts
Polished stainless lasts longest. Chrome looks best but needs the most care in salt states. Black powder coat and PVC coating are the easiest to touch up.
Chrome plating on steel is only as good as its weakest chip. Rock and tire-chain chips let de-icing brine reach the steel, and rust then spreads under the plating. Wash chrome after salted runs and seal chips as soon as you find them. Polished stainless turns dull over time, but it has no coating to flake. Powder coat and PVC coating scratch, yet paint hides the damage.
Tacoma Parts Corporation ships from SeaTac, Washington. Our Pacific Northwest customers run chains and treated roads every winter, so for us finish is a practical question.
If you run salted routes all winter, choose stainless or coated steel over chrome, because there is no plating for rust to undercut.

Radar, sensors and fog lights: durability without fault codes
On a T680, the collision mitigation radar sits at the center of the front bumper. A bumper without the matching opening, or a grille guard with a bar in front of the sensor, will trigger fault codes.
Choose "with radar cutout" for radar-equipped 2013–2021 trucks, or "with sensor" for the T680 Next Gen, and pick a grille guard confirmed for your model year. The 17-inch chrome bumper with radar cutout for the T680 also comes without the cutout, and the two look alike at a glance. The same goes for fog lights: Next Gen bumpers come with or without fog holes, so match the version to your truck.
Before ordering, call (206) 235-2411 with your VIN and a photo of the front end, and we will confirm the right version.
Replace the bumper or just the corners?
On a T680, replace only the corners when the center section and brackets are straight. Replace the whole bumper when the brackets are bent or the center chrome is cracked.
Corners stick out past the main panel, so they take dock posts, fuel islands and tight turns first. Our steel chrome bumper corner set for the T680 comes with brackets, and each side is also sold separately. Plastic chrome corners with fog holes are lighter, but they crack sooner.
If you have damage on both corners and any doubt about the center section, choose the complete bumper, because new corners on a bent center will not line up.

FAQ
What is the most durable bumper for a Kenworth T680?
For a highway T680, the most durable Kenworth truck bumper setup is a 10-gauge chrome-plated steel bumper with the radar provision your truck needs, backed by a polished stainless grille guard. For 2013–2021 trucks, that means our 17-inch bumper with radar cutout plus a Herd 300.
Is a 7-gauge steel bumper stronger than a 10-gauge bumper?
Yes. 7-gauge steel is about 0.18 inch thick versus about 0.13 inch for 10 gauge, roughly a third thicker. It resists bending better but adds weight. For highway work, 10 gauge plus a grille guard is usually enough. Vocational trucks benefit from 7 gauge or 1/4-inch plate.
Are aluminum semi-truck bumpers as durable as steel?
Not in a hard impact. Aluminum does not rust and saves weight, but it can crack where steel would bend and be straightened. Stainless-clad aluminum mainly adds corrosion resistance and shine. Choose aluminum when weight matters more than impact strength, as on weight-sensitive highway fleets.
Will a grille guard interfere with the Kenworth T680 radar?
It can. A crossbar or upright in front of the radar will trigger fault codes. Choose a grille guard listed for your T680 model year, and mount it on the brackets made for your bumper. Send us your VIN and a front-end photo before ordering, and we will confirm the fit.
Can I replace only the corners of a Kenworth T680 bumper?
Yes, if the center section and brackets are straight. We carry a steel chrome corner set with brackets, single corners for each side, and lighter plastic chrome corners with fog holes.
